Galust Sahakjan ( Armenian ԳալուստՍահակյանը; born April 8, 1949 in Yerevan , Armenian Soviet Socialist Republic , USSR ) is an Armenian politician, member and former president of the National Assembly of the Republic of Armenia .

biography

Sahakjan studied at the Yerevan State University between 1966 and 1971 . After graduation, he worked as a locksmith in the Yerevan silk factory for two years. After that, he worked for almost a decade in various school educational institutions in the Armenian capital. Over time, he rose from a simple teacher to deputy head and then head of school.

From 1991 to 1996, Sahakjan held the position of first deputy chairman of the Executive Committee in the Mashtoz District Council of Yerevan.

In the parliamentary elections in 1995, Sahakjan moved to the national assembly for the capital's electoral district No. 32 and was represented on the standing committee for science, education, culture and youth. He belonged initially to the Republican parliamentary group, later to the "Jerkrapa" parliamentary group.

In 1999 Sahakjan was re-elected and this time took over as head of the “Unity” faction and head of the above-mentioned body.

During his third term as a member of the National Assembly (2003-2007), Sahakjan was a member of the Standing Committee on Administration and Legal Affairs. At that time he joined the Republican Party . In the parliamentary elections in 2007 he repeated his success for the fourth time and in June of the same year moved to the Committee on Defense, National Security and Home Affairs.

In November 2008, Sahakjan was promoted to parliamentary group chairman and deputy head of the Republican Party. He held this position until May 2014.

On April 29, 2014, Sahakjan was appointed President of the Armenian National Assembly.

In the parliamentary elections of Armenia in 2017 , Sahakjan was re-elected, but was replaced as President of the National Assembly by Ara Bablojan .

Private

Sahakjan is married and has two children.
