Teo Chee Hean ( Chinese  張志賢  /  张志贤 , Pinyin Zhāng Zhìxián , Tamil : தியோ சீ ஹியென்; * December 27, 1954 ) is a former Rear Admiral of the Republic of Singapore Navy and a politician of the People's Action Party (PAP) from Singapore , who has been deputy since 2009 Prime Minister and since 2011 Minister for National Security Coordination.

Life

Teo Chee Hean began studying electrical engineering and management at the University of Manchester in 1973 with the support of a scholarship from the President of Singapore and the Singapore Armed Forces , which he completed with a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc. Electrical Engineering and Management Science) in 1976 highest distinction (First Class Honors) . A subsequent post-graduate studies of computer science at Imperial College London , he completed in 1977 with a Master of Science from (M.Sc. Computing Science). He then joined the Navy ( Republic of Singapore Navy ) of the armed forces of Singapore and found numerous uses as an officer and staff officer in the following years. He also completed postgraduate studies in public administration at the Harvard Kennedy School at Harvard University , which he completed in 1986 with a Master of Public Administration (MPA). Most recently he was promoted to Rear Admiral in 1991 and succeeded Rear Admiral James Leo as Commander of the Navy. He held this position until 1992, whereupon Rear Admiral Kwek Siew Jin became his successor.

After retiring from active military service, Teo Chee Hean began his political career in the People's Action Party (SAP) for which he was elected Member of Parliament on January 6, 1992 in the Marine Parade constituency . He has been a member of parliament since then, representing the constituency of Pasir Ris Central in the subsequent ninth legislative period (May 26, 1997 to October 17, 2001) and, since the tenth legislative period on March 25, 2002, the constituency of Pasir Ris West .

In the governments of Prime Minister Goh Chok Tong , he was Minister of State in the Ministry of Communications from December 21, 1992 to July 1, 1994 and, at the same time, between December 21, 1992 and April 16, 1995, Minister of State in the Ministry of Finance. He also served as Minister of State in the Defense Minister between July 2, 1994 and April 16, 1995, and then as Senior Minister of State in the Ministry of Defense from April 17, 1995 to January 14, 1996. In addition, he was between April 17, 1995 and January 14, 1996 initially acting environment minister and as successor to Mah Bow Tan from January 15, 1996 until his replacement by Lim Swee Say on January 24, 1997 environment minister. At the same time, he served as Second Defense Minister from January 15, 1996 to July 31, 2003. He was also Minister of Education as the successor to Lee Yock Suan between January 25, 1997 and July 31, 2003, whereupon Tharman Shanmugaratnam succeeded him. In order to further transformation of government Goh Chok Tong, he was on 28 April 2003 with effect from August 1, 2003 as the successor to Tony Tan was appointed defense minister and held this position in the next government of Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong on August 12, 2004.

When the government of Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong was reshuffled, Teo replaced Shunmugam Jayakumar as deputy minister on April 1, 2009 and has held this office ever since. On May 18, 2011 there was another reshuffle of the government in which the previous Interior Minister Kasiviswanathan Shanmugam became the new Foreign Minister, while Teo Chee Hean took over the office of Interior Minister. He himself was replaced as Defense Minister by Ng Eng Hen . The new cabinet was sworn in on May 21, 2011. At the same time, he replaced Wong Kan Seng as Minister for the Coordination of National Security on May 21, 2011 and has held this office since then. In this role, he is also responsible for the Strategic Group, the National Population and Talent Department and the National Secretariat for Climate Change in the Prime Minister's Office. In the course of a further reshuffle in the government of Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, he was replaced by Kasiviswanathan Shanmugam as Interior Minister on September 30, 2015. He is also President of the Singapore National Olympic Council and the National Olympic Committee (NOK) of Singapore and was awarded the 2010 Olympic Medal .

Teo Chee Hean is married to Chew Poh Yim and has a son and a daughter.
