Galvarino († November 30, 1557 ) was a Mapuche warrior in the early phase of the Arauco War .

Struggles

Galvarino took part in the Battle of Lagunillas near the Río Bío Bío between the Mapuche and García Hurtado de Mendoza on November 8, 1557 and was captured like other 150 Mapuche people. To scare off the rest of the Mapuche, Galvarino's hands were chopped off, and body parts were also cut off from the other prisoners before the Spaniards released the Mapuche.

After his return to the Mapuche group, Galvarino showed his wounds and demanded retribution and greater readiness to fight, as he had done under the old leader Lautaro. Because of his courage and dignity, he was appointed cacik . A few days later, on November 30, 1557, with arms tied to the stump, he took part with Caupolicán in the Battle of Millarapue . Galvarino and Caupolicán were both captured during the fighting, as were another 3,000 Mapuche. García Hurtado de Mendoza ordered his execution ; There are various reports of Galvarino's exact causes of death, ranging from impaling to hanging and killing by dogs.
