Galway Races

Galway Races ( Irish Rásaí na Gaillimhe ) is the name of several annual horse races in Galway, Ireland . The festival week in summer, which traditionally begins on the last Monday in July and is held on the racecourse in the Ballybrit district , is particularly well known across the region . Smaller races take place in September and October. According to the organizers, the last event in summer 2007 was attended by around 210,000 spectators; in addition, prize money totaling British pounds 1.9 million was distributed.

The history of horse racing in Galway dates back to the thirteenth century when organized tournaments were held in County Galway . After events in 1764 and 1864, races were held in Ballybrit every year from 1869 onwards. The race week has been an important part of the Irish sports world since the first radio broadcasts of the Galway Races in 1929.

Various Irish folk songs, which later found their way into popular culture in versions of The Dubliners and The Pogues, among others, testify to the immense importance of the races .
