Gamarra (Lima)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Gamarra is a textile center in the La Victoria district of Lima .

Since the 1970s, textile manufacturers and traders have settled around Jirón Prolongación Gamarra Street. The number of factories and workers quickly increased. At present, the market area extends over six blocks and is bordered by Avenidas Aviación, 28 de Julio, Huánuco and Isabel la Católica. The area around Gamarra is expanding; the neighboring streets have also specialized in the textile trade.

It is sold in large galerías that are similar to department stores, with the difference that individual plots are leased to retailers. There are also a large number of hawkers. It manufactures products for the Peruvian textile market as well as export to other Latin American countries, Europe and the United States.
