Gambrinus (not to be confused with the Austrian canned beer Gambrinus ) is a beer brand in the Czech Republic . Today, like Pilsner Urquell, it is brewed by the Plzeňský Prazdroj brewery in Pilsen . Gambrinus is a Pils beer that has been brewed since 1869.

history

The original brewery was founded in 1869 under the name of First Pilsen Stock Brewery . At first they only used the Plzeňský Gambrinus (German: Pilsner Gambrinus ) brand for their beer, later also as a brewery name .

After the Second World War, the brewery was merged with the older Bürgerliches Brauhaus (beer brand Pilsner Urquell ) under the name of Pilsener Breweries and nationalized. In 1972 the annual production exceeded the mark of 1 million hectoliters. 1992–1994 the state-owned enterprise was privatized and was named Plzeňský Prazdroj as (German: Pilsner Urquell AG ). Extensive modernization measures followed with the privatization. In 1993 the main fermentation was switched from open vats to closed, cylindro-conical tanks, and in 1998 a new brewhouse was put into operation. The annual production of the Gambrinus brand was increased to 3.5 million hl. The company has been part of the Asahi Group since 2016 .

The name comes from Gambrinus , who is believed to be the inventor of beer brewing. The brewery was the namesake and sponsor of the highest Czech football league from the 1997/98 to 2013/14 season .
