The district consists of two administrative districts ( French : quartiers ): Gamkalley Golley in the southeast and Gamkalley Sébanguey in the northwest, between which the laterite street Avenue de Gamkallé forms the border. In terms of land use, the district is divided into residential areas, industrial zones and agricultural areas with market gardens and rice fields. Gamkalley is considered to be one of the most dangerous areas of Niamey in terms of robbery and theft.

history

The Zarma village of Gamkalley was founded in the 16th century. During this period there were strong migratory movements to the area of the city of Niamey, which was founded centuries later: Zarma and Songhai from the Songhai empire fled from the Moroccan conquerors, Maouri immigrated from the Dogondoutchi area and Fulbe from the entire Sahel zone . For centuries, the residents of Gamkalley lived mainly from growing millet. The separation into the two districts Gamkalley Golley and Gamkalley Sébanguey had existed since the village was founded. The mayor, who received the title maigari , always came from the larger district of Gamkalley Sébanguey until a maigari from Gamkalley Golley was chosen in the 1920s .

Gamkalley was incorporated into Niamey in 1952. Like other parts of the city, it grew strong and uncontrolled in the 1960s. The joint administration of both districts was finally canceled and Gamkalley Golley and Gamkalley Sébanguey each received their own local councilor.

population

At the 2012 census, the two districts of Gamkalley Golley and Gamkalley Sébanguey had a combined population of 20,438 living in 3,388 households. At the 2001 census, the population was 30,126 in 4,656 households, and at the 1988 census, the population was 22,972 in 3,980 households.

Economy and Infrastructure

Vegetable growing on the Niger River in Gamkalley

Gamkalley's nurseries cover a total of 230 hectares. Mainly lettuce and cabbage are grown, as well as peppers, tomatoes, cucumbers, beans, celery, okra , peppers, parsley, zucchini, carrots and beets. The vegetables are intended for sale in the capital. The gardeners are almost exclusively men and mostly Zarma. Some industrial companies dispose of their toxic waste in the Niger River, which leads to contamination of the agricultural land. Besides vegetables, rice is grown and another occupation is fishing. Gamkalley residents traditionally belong to the landowners in the Niamey Green Belt , where they farm.

There are several public elementary schools in Gamkalley. The oldest, the Ecole primaire de Gamkalley I , was founded in 1953. The secondary school Collège d'enseignement général de Gamkalley (CEG Gamkalley) has existed since 2005.

The houses in Gamkalley are usually adobe buildings devoid of any comfort. Cooking takes place outdoors. There is no running water and accordingly no showers and water closets.
