The Hippodrome (pronunciation: [ˌipɔˈdʁɔm] ) is a sports facility for horse and camel races in Niamey in Niger .

investment

The Hippodrome is located in the Niamey IV arrondissement on Boulevard du 15 Avril, the road connecting the city center and Niamey Airport . Niamey train station is located directly northwest of the racetrack . The Niamey Green Belt begins in the northeast . The adjacent neighborhoods in the southeast and southwest are Talladjé and Gamkalley Golley .

The facility has four race tracks: over 1600 meters, 2000 meters and 2400 meters for horse races and over 2500 meters for camel races. The routes are made of sand. Races usually take place every weekend.

history

Until 1958, the Hippodrome was located closer to the city center on the site of the later Stade municipal de Niamey . The place name of the Lacouroussou district is reminiscent of its former location , a modification of the French term la course for "the racetrack".

The hippodrome at its current location was opened in 1961 by President Hamani Diori . During the 2005 Francophonie Games, the Hippodrome hosted a Fantasia in front of around 60,000 spectators.
