Gandalf Ridge is a volcanic mountain ridge on the Scott Coast of the East Antarctic Victoria Land . It rises at the northwest end of Hurricane Ridge north of Mount Morning .
The name is borrowed from the nickname of Ohio State University geologist Philip R. Kyle , who explored this ridge in December 1977. The nickname, in turn, comes from the character of the magician Gandalf from the novel The Lord of the Rings by the British writer JRR Tolkien .
