Garage X Theater Petersplatz
Werk X Petersplatz (formerly Garage X Theater Petersplatz or Werk X Eldorado ) is a theater in Vienna's 1st district, Inner City, on Petersplatz.
history
Venue
The theater is located in the basement of a Wilhelminian-style building at Petersplatz 1. These rooms have been used culturally since the end of the 19th century; a cellar restaurant was first mentioned as early as 1873. In October 1958, clarinetist Fatty George opened Fatty's Saloon . Jazz musicians like Louis Armstrong could be heard here until Fatty's Saloon closed in 1963. After that, the Art Center (with the establishment of the saloon), a bohemian meeting place, was in operation until 1966. The premises were revived in 1982 as a permanent stage for theater director Dieter Haspel's theater group. Under the name of Ensemble Theater , the group played in the immediate vicinity of their place of origin, the Café Einfalt in Goldschmiedgasse . The Ensemble Theater and the new theater premises were inaugurated by the then City Councilor for Culture Helmut Zilk and opened with Bertolt Brecht's Threepenny Opera , staged by the artistic director Dieter Haspel. Contemporary authors such as Wolfgang Bauer and Heinz Rudolf Unger , Heiner Müller, Botho Strauss and others. v. a. were on the program alongside other Brecht pieces.
Garage X
In 2009 the theater was taken over by Harald Posch and Ali Abdullah by Dieter Haspel, who was the artistic director of the theater for over thirty years. The two theater makers have already initiated numerous events under the name DRAMA X at various venues in Vienna. After a renovation, the former Ensemble Theater was reopened on November 27, 2009 under the name Garage X Theater Petersplatz under new artistic direction.
PLANT X
In the 2014/2015 season, Garage X was merged with the former “Stadtlabor Kabelwerk” in Vienna's 12th district of Meidling. From now on, large-format productions are to be shown in the new WERK X in Meidling in cooperation with city and state theaters in German-speaking countries, while “WERK X Petersplatz”, as the venue at Petersplatz is now called, is available as a curated venue for the independent scene in Vienna stands. The artistic direction of WERK X is the responsibility of Posch and Abdullah. Cornelia Anhaus has been the artistic director of WERK X Petersplatz since 2018 .
Awards
At the Nestroy Gala in November 2012 , the theater received the renowned Vienna Theater Prize in the “ Special Prize ” category for the entire 2011/2012 season.
General
The program is also accompanied by discursive events and late-night club formats. The CLUB X should still theater alien to serve younger audience with DJs and live acts as an interface. Two leeway are available, the resources are considered secured by a 4-year grant from the City of Vienna.
