In 1967 the theater was founded as a “café theater behind the ditch” by a group of theater studies students ( Götz Fritsch , Dieter Haspel , Hilde Berger , Marlies Brudermanns) in the style of the very popular Parisian theater form of the café-théâtre . After many interludes and various venues, Hilde Spiel , then a critic in the FAZ , called Theater Today the overall performance of the Ensemble Theater in the 1974/75 season as the best of a theater in the German-speaking area. In 1977 director Ernst Haeusserman made the previous studio stage of the Theater in der Josefstadt in the basement of the Wiener Konzerthaus available to the Ensemble Theater. In order to meet the high demands that have been tried and tested on large-scale productions, a double plan was introduced: continuous use of the small room in the concert hall, coupled with large-scale productions outside the house. In 1981, the final end also for this venue.
In 1981 Fatty George's former jazz bar “Fattys Saloon” on Petersplatz became the permanent home of theater director Dieter Haspel's theater group - under the name “Ensembletheater am Petersplatz” in the immediate vicinity of the group's starting point, Café Einfalt in Goldschmiedgasse . The Ensemble Theater was inaugurated as the central stage. The charm of the café theater was retained with the bar as an integral part. The Vienna Children's Theater regularly performed its productions on the stage of the Ensemble Theater.
In the 2009/2010 season the theater was taken over by Harald Posch and Ali Abdullah. The premises at Petersplatz have been used by the Garage X Theater Petersplatz ever since .
