The Sonder-Kfz-1 (SK-1) was a light combat vehicle that was put into service with the Barracked People's Police of the GDR in 1953/54 . The vehicle was based on the chassis of the Phenomenon Granit 30K truck . Due to the increased weight, the rear axle was converted with twin tires and reinforced springs. The special Kfz-1 was designed for use on paved roads and had a fording ability of 0.82 m. Other types of vehicle were planned for use as communication vehicles and telephone vehicles.
From the mid-1950s, Soviet armored personnel carriers could be imported into the GDR, which were used in the NVA . The Sonder Kfz-1 were handed over to the working class combat groups for property protection. The combat groups used the vehicles on August 13, 1961 during the construction of the Berlin Wall . The Sonder-Kfz-1 was the only armored vehicle mass-produced in the GDR.
