Dom Garcia de Noronha (* 1480 in Lisbon , Portugal , † April 3, 1540 in Goa , India ) was a Portuguese nobleman. He was the third viceroy of the Estado da India .

Live and act

As far as life can be reconstructed, Garcia de Noronha comes from noble circumstances; his father, Dom Fernando de Noronha, was a member of the Privy Council and the royal steward .

As a young nobleman, frequented the royal court. In addition, he was a member of the Privy Council at the court of King Manuel I after the death of his father . As early as 1511 he was commander-in-chief of a squadron of six ships to India.

He was married to Ines de Castro and had 4 children with her. He was also a nephew of Afonso de Albuquerque . A street in Lisbon is named after him.

Viceroy of India

As the successor to the seriously ill Governor General Nuno da Cunha , he was appointed Viceroy of Portuguese India ( Estado da India ) by King John III by royal decree on March 18, 1538 . appointed by Portugal. On April 6, 1538 he landed in India.

During his reign he promoted the settlement of missionaries on the island of Celebes and in Macassar . He issued a ban on the establishment and construction of mainly Hindu and Buddhist temples within the Estado da India. He officially made peace with the King of Cambay in Diu .

He died as viceroy on April 3, 1540 in Goa.
