Garden Shed is the debut album by the English progressive rock band England . It was released on Arista Records in 1977 .

Creation and publication

Soon after the band formed in 1975, Jamie Moses and Mark Ibbotson left England and were replaced by Frank Holland and Jode Leigh. With them the debut album was recorded. A single was also released and the band had planned to release the album with elaborate artwork , which was not feasible for financial reasons. Soon after the release of Garden Shed , the band's record company withdrew their support and England broke up in 1978.

It was not until 2005, after the re-establishment of England, that a CD with the restored artwork came onto the market via the band's own label Garden Shed Music. In the meantime, the album had not been available for a long time and had become a sought-after rarity: the original LP edition sold out quickly, a CD edition was only available in Japan in 1988, and a remastered CD version from 1997 was soon sold out. After the re-release via Garden Shed Music, the album was released several times on various labels, e. Partly with bonus titles, most recently in 2015 with a bonus CD and 28-page booklet.

style

Garden Shed is a classic progressive rock album with catchy melodies, occasionally complex structures and longer pieces. Henderson's high vocals and variable bass playing as well as Webb's Mellotron use are striking . This shows a certain similarity to the style and atmosphere of Yes and Genesis , but there are also occasional echoes of the music of King Crimson , Gentle Giant , Supertramp or Druid .

reception

The album has long been a sought-after rarity and a forgotten classic of progressive rock. The eclipsed magazine included it in its list of the 150 most important prog albums. Horst Straske from Babyblauen Seiten says: “In terms of quality, England offers five consistently high-class titles.” “It is an extremely interesting cross between elements from the old Genesis and Yes. The band really knew how to use the characteristic stylistic devices of these two bands without looking like a copy. ”Jörg Schumann finds Garden Shed “ wonderfully independent and refreshing ”and expresses an“ unreserved recommendation for lovers of classic progressive rock ” .
