The Garden of Allah glacier field, together with the Garden of Eden glacier field, is one of the largest ice fields in the New Zealand Alps and New Zealand .

Origin of name

In 1934, the mountaineer and later President of the Royal Society of New Zealand , Allen Priestley Thomson , gave the southern ice field of the two the name " Garden of Eden " . Based on this, the northern ice field was named " Garden of Allah " in 1971 .

geography

The glacier field is located in the West Coast region , on the South Island of New Zealand, 56 km northeast of Aoraki / Mount Cook , which is New Zealand's highest mountain with a height of 3724  m . Hokitika , as the next largest town, is about 67 km to the northeast and 37 km to the west coast.

The two ice fields of the Garden of Allah and the Garden of Eden , which experts have given the abbreviation GoEA, extend together, starting from Mount Barlow ( 2100  m ) in the west, over the Outram Peak ( 2399  m ) in the south, Mount Kensington ( 2444  m ) in the north, to Mount Stoddart ( 2223  m ) in the east, over an area of 36 km 2 . The Farrar Glacier , Barlow Glacier , Arethusa Icefall and Colin Campbell Glacier are part of the Garden of Eden and the Adams Glacier , Belzebub Glacier and Lambert Glacier are part of the contiguous ice surface of the Garden of Allah .

As to the administrative division, the Garden of Allah belongs to the Westland District of the West Coast .
