Gardyne Castle is a tower house about 2 km southwest of the village of Friockheim in the Scottish county of Angus . Historic Scotland has listed the 16th century building, which still serves as the home of the owner family, as a Category A Historic Building.

history

The Gardyne clan had the Tower House built and the year 1568 is carved on a stone. The date stone also bears the coat of arms of King James VI. and the motto "God save the King". Together with the particular style of some architectural details, such as the crowd watchtowers with conical roofs, this suggests that the house was built in the Stuart style and at the time of the new king, who, in contrast to his deposed predecessor, Maria Stuart , was standing.

The Gardynes had a long-running feud with the Guthries of nearby Guthrie Castle , so the Crown eventually confiscated the lands of both families in 1632. The Gardynes then moved to a nearby home and Gardyne Castle came into the possession of the Lyell family of Dysart , Fife .

In 1740, a large extension was added to the Tower House, which forms the central wing of the current building. Another extension took place in 1910; Harold Tarbolton was the architect. Gardyne Castle underwent renovations in the early 21st century.
