Gari tellinella is a type of mussel from the sand mussel family(Psammobiidae).

features

The small, flattened, flattened case is up to about 26 millimeters long. It is elongated-elliptical in outline, the length / width ratio is about 1.8. The case is a little unequal, the vertebrae sit only a little behind the center line (based on the case length).

The anterior dorsal margin, which is only slightly arched, slopes gently towards the rounded anterior end. The slightly shorter posterior dorsal margin is also only slightly arched and falls a little steeper towards the posterior end, which is offset by an obtuse angle. The rear end is truncated almost at an angle. The case gapes at the rear end, but the opening is very small. The dark brown ligament sits on the outside and extends from the vertebra only a short distance from the posterior dorsal margin. The lock of the two flaps has two cardinal teeth each, lateral teeth are missing. In the left valve, the anterior cardinal tooth is large and split or two-pointed, whereas the posterior cardinal tooth is thin and lamellar. In the right valve, the anterior cardinal tooth is larger than the posterior cardinal tooth, but both are split and two-pointed. The surface line is deeply indented, the U-shaped bay extends below the eddy. The line of the jacket bay coincides with the jacket edge at the lower edge over most of the length. The two sphincters leave clear scars in the shell.

The shell is thin and translucent, but has solid walls. The surface shows fine concentric ridges and pits as well as very fine radial lines. The annual growth is well marked by deeper pits and very narrow growth strips and often also by colored bands. The inside edge of the housing is smooth. The color of the shell (outside) is variable, from yellowish-white, orange, pink, chestnut brown or matt red. arranged in contrasting ribbons, often still with rays of red and maroon. The inside is glossy white, yellowish, orange or reddish brown. The periostracum is thin and shiny.

The soft body of the animal is whitish, the edge of the coat has tooth-like fringes. The animals have a large foot and two very long, separate siphons . The upper outflow siphon has fine white lines on the outside.

Geographical distribution and habitat

The distribution area of the species extends from Iceland and Norway in the north to Morocco and the Mediterranean in the south.

The animals live buried or digging in coarse sand and sandy gravel from the low water line to a depth of around 60 meters, exceptionally also up to 460 meters.

Taxonomy

The taxon was first described in 1818 by Jean-Baptiste de Lamarck as Psammobia tellinella . It is generally accepted as belonging to the genus Gari Schumacher, 1817.
