The Garnethill Synagogue is a synagogue in the Scottish city of Glasgow . In 1979 the building was included in the Scottish monument lists, initially in category B. The upgrade to the highest monument category A took place in 2004.

history

In the 1820s, a Jewish community came together in Glasgow. Although the Jewish community in Glasgow grew slowly, by the end of the century it had grown to become the largest in Scotland. After services were initially held in a rented room on the High Street , the congregation rented an old post office on Trongate in the 1830s . A later rented room in Anderson's College (nucleus of the University of Strathclyde ) was soon given up due to its proximity to the autopsy room . In 1852 the parish bought a house at the intersection of George Street and John Street for £ 1,700 .

At the beginning of the 1870s, this building proved too small for the growing community. It was decided to build a new synagogue with an attached school. In November 1875, the Garnethill Synangogue acquired the property. Between 1877 and 1879 the building was built to a design by John McLeod . McLeod consulted the Jewish London architect N. S. Joseph , who had already designed synagogues, for planning . After the foundation stone was laid in March 1877, the building was consecrated on September 9, 1879. It is the earliest synagogue building in Scotland. The total cost was nearly £ 14,000. In 1998 parts of the building were restored. Historic Scotland made funds available for this.
