The garrison school in Braunschweig was built between 1795 and 1796 by the architect Heinrich Ludwig Rothermundt at the behest of Duke Karl Wilhelm Ferdinand as a replacement for the old Aegidi school located on the site.

The symmetrically constructed, two-story classicist half-timbered building is located in the immediate vicinity of the Aegidienkirche . It was built as a school building for the children of the Braunschweig garrison , especially for those of the Aegidien barracks, which were directly adjacent to the property but were demolished in 1843. With its colored paintwork, the structure gives the impression of being a massive stone building. In the middle of the 19th century, probably at the time of the demolition of the barracks and the construction of Lessingplatz to the south, an extension was added on the west side. The building served as a school until 1926, almost 130 years. The garrison school was badly damaged by bombing raids in World War II , but was largely rebuilt after the war. Today the building serves as an office building.

To the south of the building is the Lessingplatz with the Lessing monument erected in 1853 .
