David Tremlett attended Falmouth College of Art from 1962 to 1963, before studying sculpture at the Birmingham School of Art from 1963 to 1966 and then at the Royal College of Art in London. He toured North America and Australia in the early 1970s and the Middle East and Africa from 1978 to 1987.

In the 1970s, Tremlett became popular as an artist, along with artists such as Richard Long and Gilbert and George . Tremlett began with his wall drawings in 1969. Since the 1980s he has mainly worked with pastel chalks. Sometimes his art is only temporary until it is painted over or weathered, often it is permanent wall drawings in the sense of a room design. He developed his formal language on his numerous travels. He often uses geometric shapes or signs that he borrows from other cultures.

While traveling, especially to Africa and Asia, Tremlett also developed artist books. In the production of his books, David Tremlett often works with local printing companies, so that unique artist publications are also created in terms of material and printing technology.

In 1972 he took part in Documenta 5 in Kassel with an installation in the Individual Mythologies : Self-Presentation - Performances - Activities - Changes department .

In 1992 he was on the shortlist for the Turner Prize for the numerous wall drawings he had created around the world. He also worked in the Kestner Society in Hanover. Since the late 1970s, he worked on murals for prominent buildings, such as the British Embassy in Berlin (its largest of 16 x 46 meters), the British Council building in Nairobi and the Capella delle Brunate in La Morra at Barolo , along with his friend Sol Lewitt .

In 2006 he designed stained glass windows for the Church of St. Peter and Paul in Villenauxe-la-Grande in France. Tremlett's work has been shown internationally in many private and public galleries and museums, including the Center Georges Pompidou in Paris , the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam , the Hamburger Kunsthalle , the Musee des Beaux Arts in Grenoble , the Pecci Museum in Prato , Italy , and the Museum of Modern Art in New York City .

In September 2011, David Tremlett designed the central staircase at Tate Britain in London . The wall drawing "Drawing for Free Thinking" will be on permanent display in the important museum until at least 2016.

In autumn 2016, David Tremlett completed an extensive wall drawing on the inside and outside walls of the chapel in Coazzolo near Alba in Piedmont.
