The rose garden in Lidice, 20 kilometers northwest of Prague , was laid out in 1955 on the site of the memorial to the Lidice massacre . The internationally awarded Garden of Peace and Friendship ( Sad míru a přátelství ) is the largest rosarium in the Czech Republic with over 25,000 rose bushes .

History of the rosarium

In 1954 the initiative Lidice shall live ('Lidice shall live') under the patronage of Sir Barnett Stross was suggested in memory of the victims of the massacre in Lidice, which was carried out in June 1942 by the Nazi occupiers in retaliation for the murder of Reinhard Heydrichs was perpetrated to create a rosarium. The rose garden created by František Marek and Bohumil Kavka is part of the Lidice Memorial, which is located between the village that was destroyed in 1942 and the new Lidice village. The 3.5 hectare rosarium was laid out on a sloping site. The geometrically designed rose garden is structured by paths, roundels, fountains and statues by Bedřich Stefan and Karel Hladik. In June 1955 the Garden of Peace and Friendship in Lidice was opened.

The roses were planted in groups and in ornaments by the landscape architects. A planting in the form of a rose blossom is dedicated to the men shot in the village, two smaller rose ornaments remind of the deported women and children from Lidice.

The first rose bushes were donated from Great Britain. The British rose breeder Harry Wheatcroft is growing a sport of the Meilland rose 'Tzigane' for the rose garden as part of the Rosen für Lidice campaign and named the orange-yellow Floribunda rose 'Rose of Lidice'. Numerous rosariums, botanical gardens, institutions and rose growers from all over the world donated roses for the garden. From Germany, among others, the renowned Naumburg rose breeder Karl Müller and the garden management of the Haus Berglinden estate took part in the campaign and donated a considerable part of the rose bushes.

In 1961 the garden was fundamentally redesigned and the donated roses were grouped in color-coordinated groups and ornaments. The garden was given its current shape as part of the international youth project Roses for Lidice in 2001/2002.

On June 1, 2015, the rose garden was awarded the title "Award of Garden Excellence" by the World Federation of Rose Societies .

The Garden of Peace and Friendship is now the largest rose garden in the Czech Republic with over 240 types of roses and more than 25,000 rose bushes and was awarded the “Record of the Year” award in 2015 for the largest number of rose bushes in a Czech garden.

Since 2005 it has been possible to get married in the rose garden . It is a tradition that newlyweds plant a rose in the rose garden to commemorate the victims of the Lidice massacre and to commemorate their wedding.
