Gary Wayne Athans (born June 12, 1961 in Kelowna , British Columbia ) is a retired Canadian alpine ski racer .

Athans comes from a sports-loving family. His father, George Athans, was a diver and participant in the 1936 and 1948 Olympic Games . His mother was a swimmer. His brothers were active as water skiers and freestyle skiing . Athans opted for alpine skiing, where he was able to become junior world champion in 1975. He was then represented in the Canadian national team for eight years. He took part in the 1984 Winter Olympics in Sarajevo . In the downhill race he finished 26th out of a total of 61 participants.

After the end of his active career, Athans worked as a real estate agent and trainer, among other things for water skiing and alpine skiing in Kelowna.

Athans, 2010 was one of the torchbearers in the torch relay of the Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver .
