Gary Sheehan

Gary Sheehan (born June 15, 1964 ) is a Canadian - Swiss ice hockey coach . He is under contract as head coach at the NLB club HC Ajoie .

Coaching career

Sheehan worked as a volunteer trainer in the youth sector in his home province of Québec and came to Switzerland in 1991. There he worked full-time as a trainer in the youth department of HC Friborg-Gottéron . In 1996 he was assistant coach of Geneve-Servette HC in the National League B . For the 1997/98 season he took over the post of head coach, but was dismissed in November 97. Sheehan then moved to HC Star Lausanne , where he was involved in youth development. In 2003 he became head coach of Lausanne HC in the National League A and worked in this position for two seasons.

Since 2000, Sheehan has also been running a company with which he organizes ice hockey camps for young people. For the 2005/06 season, the NLB club HC La Chaux-de-Fonds signed him as head coach. He led the team to the NLB playoff final in 2008 and 2009. In March 2013, they separated despite a contract that was valid until 2015. In December 2013, Sheehan signed a contract with SC Bern (NLA) as an assistant coach until the end of the 2013/14 season.

In April 2014 he took over the position of head coach at NLB club HC Ajoie , which he led to the championship title in the second highest Swiss division in the 2015/16 season. However, the club had previously stated that it would not take part in the league qualification for the NLA. In 2016/17 Ajoie reached the NLB semi-finals under his leadership and was defeated there by SC Langenthal with 1: 4 games. In February 2020 he and Ajoie caused a big surprise when he led the second division team to win the Swiss Cup with a 7-3 final win over HC Davos .
