Gas family is a name for types of fuel gas that are similar in terms of their physical and combustion properties. Its main use is gas installation.

A distinction is made between 4 gas families (GF for short).

• 1. City and coke oven gas - Marked with S with a high content of hydrogen and carbon monoxide, very toxic and now rather rare. Nevertheless included in the TRGI .
• 2. Natural gas sub-group LL and E (old designation: L and H) according to the Wobbe index - marked with N, natural gases that mainly consist of methane.
• 3. Liquefied Petroleum Gas - Identified by F, petroleum refinery by-products such as. B. propane or butane and their mixtures.
• 4. Gas-air mixture - Today it is almost of no importance.

The installation of building services systems of the 1st, 2nd and 4th GF is regulated in the TRGI , that of the 3rd GF in the TRF .

In Germany, gas families are classified in the DVGW worksheet G 260.
