Replica of Gaspar de Lemos' ship

Gaspar de Lemos was a Portuguese navigator and explorer .

After taking possession of Brazil by Pedro Alvares Cabral for the Portuguese crown on 21 April 1500 Gaspar de Lemos received the command of the ship, which the news on May 2, 1500 after Lisbon was to bring.

On his journey, as log entries show, he discovered the third largest bay in the world, which was still unknown at the time, the largest in the southern hemisphere, on May 5, 1500, and left a stone at its entrance, as was customary with the Portuguese at the time when making discoveries. He stayed in the bay for 5 days before heading back to Portugal. Only over a year later, on November 1, 1501, did he return as one of the captains with Amerigo Vespucci , who was then considered the official explorer. Vespucci gave the bay the name of the day it was discovered: " All Saints Bay " (Portuguese: Bahia de Todos os Santos). Today the city of Salvador (São Salvador da Baía de Todos os Santos), the first capital of Brazil, lies on its coast .

On January 1, 1502, Gaspar de Lemos discovered the Guanabara Bay about 1500 km south of it , which he mistakenly believed to be an estuary. Therefore he baptized this “river” Rio de Janeiro ( Portuguese for “ river of January ”).
