Gatwick Airport train station

Gatwick Airport railway station is the station of the airport Gatwick Airport on the Brighton Main Line , the main route between London and Brighton . The platforms are located directly below the south terminal and the ticket offices are adjacent to the main hall. The station was one of 18 stations operated by Network Rail but transferred to Southern on January 29, 2012 . Gatwick Airport is served by trains from Gatwick Express , Southern, Southeastern , First Great Western , First Capital Connect and Virgin Trains . Since January 11, 2016, the station has been in the area of ​​the TfL Oyster Card . Since then, contactless card payments have also been possible.

Current station

The station was opened in 1891 by the London, Brighton and South Coast Railway under the name Gatwick . He served Gatwick Racecourse . A previous train station at the same location was closed in 1876. From 1946 to 1958, the station was called Gatwick Racecourse because of the neighboring racecourse , although it had already been closed for war purposes in 1940 and was not reopened after the end of World War II . The station was hardly used until 1958. With the complete new construction of the airport, the station was also overhauled and received a direct connection to the new airport. On May 27, 1958, the new building was opened and put into operation.

Formerly Tinsley Green / Gatwick Airport station

From 1935 to 1958 a train station was used, which was 1.37 km south of Gatwick / Gatwick Racecourse . It was closer to the original airport, which had opened east of the Brighton Main Line. This station had a direct transition to the airport terminal called Beehive . With the opening of the current station, the Tinsley Green station went out of service and was almost completely demolished. Only parts of the transition to the old terminal and some of the platform are still preserved.
