Gauche plural
Gauche plurielle (dt. Diverse left ) was the name of an alliance of left parties in France that made it possible for Lionel Jospin to be elected Prime Minister after winning the National Assembly in 1997 . Jospin succeeded the conservative Alain Juppé and ruled with his cabinet for five years under conditions of cohabitation with the conservative President Jacques Chirac .
However, after an unexpected defeat in the first round of the presidential election , Jospin announced his retirement from politics in 2002. The parliamentary election that followed was lost, and the Gauche plurielle dissolved again.
