Gauthier Louppe
Gauthier Louppe (born May 12, 1959 in Luxembourg ) is a Belgian violin maker and visual artist.
Live and act
Gauthier Louppe comes from a family in which handicrafts using wood had a long tradition; in this way he learned to use the appropriate tools in his childhood. He trained as a violin maker between 1979 and 1983 at the international violin making school in Cremona . He then worked in the same city for violin maker Giorgio Scolari (* 1952) and for Mario Gadda in Mantua . Louppe's main work is the restoration and manufacture of string instruments as well as trading.
He received special attention through the creation of new, abstract forms in violin making. With the same aesthetic, Louppe built five-string viola violins, "Pentacle" or "Quintessence", based on an instrument that was built in the 18th century with the same range as the so-called Quinton.
Because of the abstract shapes of his instruments, the press called him the Dalí of violin making. For several years he has also devoted himself to painting and sculpture with abstract images and objects mostly related to musical instruments.
Violin making school
In 2010 Louppe, with the support of the city council of Marche en Famenne, was the initiator and founder of the first violin making school in the French-speaking part of Belgium. In this way he was able to pass on his knowledge to a young generation of violin makers.
