Gaxa (also called Gaxahamn ) on the Swedish island of Öland was a port on the northeastern coast of the island in the Middle Ages and was located south of Högby . From the 16th to the 18th century, the place was a post office and post port for shipping with Klintehamn on Gotland . Initially, the boats used for mail traffic, the so-called gotlandssnipor , were simply pulled onto the sand. Later a small port facility and an inn were built. Post sailors from Gotland could have to wait the whole winter in Öland if the weather conditions were unfavorable because the sea was frozen. In Gaxahamn, Carl von Linné and his companion also went ashore in June 1741.

At the end of the 18th century Gaxahamn was so silted up that the harbor could no longer be used. The place was abandoned and Böda took over its function. In 1847 the last of the Gotlanssnipor was put into operation on the route, and steamers have been sailing from Öland to Gotland in summer since 1836. With the commissioning of the Polhem in 1856, the winter voyages of the mail ships ended, which had to record several deaths due to storms and rough seas.

The sandbank Långebå lies in front of the silted up port of Gaxa. It was decided to erect a lighthouse here, the 23 m high iron lighthouse was built in 1898 and is an open pillar construction.
