Högby Church

Högby in the north of the Swedish island of Öland is a village that belongs to the municipality of Borgholm .

history

Högby is mentioned for the first time in 1320 as Höghaby . In addition to agriculture and fishing, limestone mining has also been an important economic factor in the region for centuries . Högby's function as a center in the north of the island was taken over in the 20th century by Löttorp , one of those towns that developed around a train station when the railway ( Böda Skogsjärnväg ) came to the island in 1908.

Buildings

The Church of Högby dates from around 1200 and has a strong defense tower. To the north of the church are Öland's only surviving church stables . There is a Dutch mill south of the church . The building with thick walls, erected in 1840 as a scrubbing mill for limestone, is over 13 meters high. In the 1920s, the mill, which has been privately owned and inhabited since 1985, went out of service.

Surroundings

Horns Kungsgård and Hornsviken

To the west of the municipality is Horns Kungsgård (Royal Court) and Hornsviken (also called Hornssjön), Öland's only large lake. Large parts of the former royal court are now a nature reserve . The bird sanctuary at Hornsjön is in the vicinity. The lake, on the banks of which are dense forests ( oak , ash and birch ), is populated with dozens of species of fish. Klosterholmen is located on the western bank . This ruin has long been associated with a monastery . Today Klosterholmen is considered to be a medieval manor (Storgård) with a defensive function.

The west coast

Horns udde is a headland on the west side of the island with steep limestone cliffs and a view of Blå Jungfrun . The stone industry began mining limestone here as early as the 16th century, which helped build a number of Swedish castles and churches. The scars in the landscape are still visible along the west coast. Today there is only one quarry left on Horns udde.

The northerly Mens (or cafeteria) Alvaret is a small karst landscape ( Alvar ), which was declared a nature reserve, with a very typical flora and fauna: chives (Allium schoenoprasum), Bins cutting (Cladium mariscus) and orchid species like the Fliegenragwurz (Ophrys insectifera ) and the pyramidal dogwort (Anacamptis pyramidalis).

Högby lighthouse fyr

The old fishing spot Alvedsjöbodar is located south of Horns udde . Like others, it shows the former importance of seasonal fishing to the islanders. In the early 19th century, the port was the mooring point for steamers operating between Oskarshamn and Alvedsjö .

The east coast

The 23 m high lighthouse Högby fyr is located on the east side of the island on the headland of Långebå . It was built as a steel construction for the large craft exhibition in Stockholm in 1897 and came to Högby dismantled in 1898.

Personalities

The Swedish long-distance runner John Eke (1886–1964) and the Swedish professor of veterinary medicine Sven Axel Hoflund (1906–1979) were born in Högby .
