particularities

only lake in Öland

The Hornsjön (also Hornssjön ) is the only major lake on the Swedish Baltic island of Öland .

ecology

The lake in the north of the island, northwest of Löttorp , is surrounded by forests. In addition to alders , oaks and pines also dominate . In the northern part of the lake there are some smaller, uninhabited islands with trees and bushes.

There are large reed areas on the north shore of the lake . The flat east bank is sandy. Chandelier algae grow on the lake bed . Ten species of fish are native to the lake. Heron , Caspian tern , osprey , Sandpiper , marsh harriers , goldeneye and grebes are encountered species of birds.

Agile frogs live in the swamps surrounding the lake . The western part of the lake is part of the Horns Kungsgård nature reserve , where twelve of the eighteen species of bat native to Sweden can be found. In addition to the pug bat , the rough-skin bat and the pond bat are also observed.

history

In the years 1905 to 1909 the water level of the lake was artificially lowered by one meter. Bog soils in the southern part of the lake were then used for agriculture. Due to the lower water level, however, larger amounts of sand were also released, which formed dunes on the northeast bank . As a result of the intervention, the fish population in the lake and the biodiversity of the bird fauna decreased significantly.
