Alvedsjöbodar
Alvedsjöbodar is a Swedish fishing station ( Swedish fiskeläge ) on the island of Öland .
Location and nature
The place is located near the western coast road between Jordhamn and Byerum and belongs to the municipality of Borgholm . The gray half-timbered fishermen's huts stand in rows above the steep stone beach on Kalmarsund on a low limestone foundation . In front of the doors the entrance is paved with limestone and the roofs are covered with reeds. The “Ölandssnipor” (boats with a pointed bow and stern) and landed barges are moored by the sea and are pulled onto the beach with the help of winches, chains and planks. Behind the huts are the net gardens, racks for drying the nets.
history
Alvedsjöbodar is not shown on any map of the 17th and 18th centuries and was created by a regulation at the beginning of the 19th century. For centuries, the islanders only fished for their own use on the Öland coast . Nevertheless, it played a major role in the peasant economy. Professional fishing was only practiced from the 20th century. Contemporary sources reveal the importance of herring fishing during the Middle Ages . The rural population was required to pay their tithe to the state and church in the form of fresh or salted herring or cod . During the herring season, hundreds of fishermen met in the once large fishing villages of Sikavarp on Kapelludden, in Bredsätra and in Kyrkhamn on Öland's southern tip. However, as early as 1768, Petter Ähstrand, the royal governor of Northern Öland, discovered that fishing for herring was worthwhile 20 years ago, but is no longer worth the effort. Around the turn of the 20th century, regular freight and passenger traffic with a steamer to Oskarshamn took place from the port in Alvedsjöbodar . In the early years of ferry traffic, market days were held in Alvedsjöbodar. Most cattle were traded. Parts of the village were destroyed in a fire in July 1992 and most of it has been rebuilt.
economy
