Gay-Lussac is an impact crater located north of the striking Copernicus crater in the foothills of the Montes-Carpatus mountain range .
The rim of the crater appears slightly deformed, but is essentially circular. The crater floor is flat but rough. A central peak is missing, in its place the floor shows several small depressions.
The satellite crater Gay-Lussac A adjoins the southeastern rim of the crater .
In the southwest there is a wide ridge called Rima Gay-Lussac . The almost straight formation with curves at both ends runs over a distance of 40 kilometers from southwest to northeast.
