The Gayhelp.de project, founded in 1997, was an Internet platform for young gays , lesbians and bisexuals on the subject of coming out . It was operated by the nationally recognized association GayUnion eV, which is recognized as a non-profit organization .
The association stopped operating the domain on February 24, 2010 and transferred all content to the association's own Internet portal.
General
Gayhelp.de supported homosexual adolescents and adults with information on the subject of coming out, contact addresses for contact persons, as well as experience reports from like-minded people in the form of texts and videos. Another focus of the portal is on offering joint group activities.
In addition, the voluntary project assisted the mostly young people with the problem of dealing with their own homo- or bisexuality. For this purpose, the visitors were offered an extensive collection of articles, contact and advice options among users, a telephone advice hotline, an advisory team for peers and professional psychological advice.
The portal relied on user participation . The users could get involved in the editorial work and publish their coming-out experiences as a video or a written contribution on the portal. Furthermore, as so-called "user advisors", they were available to help users with their problems.
A weighty focus of his efforts put Gayhelp on the reduction of discrimination and incomprehension towards homosexual youth as a result of twisted prejudices and clichés. This was done, among other things, through video reports on Gayhelp and the public YouTube channel.
Between the middle of 2008 and the end of February 2010, Gayhelp was a project of the nationally recognized association GayUnion eV, which is recognized as a non-profit organization
Criticism of the association's board
In June 2010 gay scene magazines from North Rhine-Westphalia reported on a dispute between anonymous critics and the board of the GayUnion eV The mainly criticized board member resigned in spring 2011.
