Gayle Griffith (born March 22, 1940 ) is an American country and rockabilly musician .

Life

Gayle Griffith was the son of Gladys and Harold Griffith and was born in 1940. His interest in music was aroused by his grandparents, who gave the family a piano that he soon knew how to play. Griffith attended Indiana School for the Blind when he was seven years old because he was blind . He spent the week at school while Griffith visited his parents and sister Sharon Diane on weekends.

Career

Griffith started his career in 1954 at the age of 14. For Cliff Ayre's label Emerald Records , he recorded his first single Rockin 'and a-Knockin' / Anchor My Heart together with the LMC Trio in November 1954 , which was extremely successful in Indiana . As early as the summer of 1954 he had made several appearances with Curly Myers and his Ranch Boys at the "Shady Acres Ranch" near Mulberry , Indiana. He had also played in Bill Monroe's Brown County Jamboree .

Griffith made his first television appearance in August 1954 on Shorty Sheehan's Show, followed by an appearance on Hayloft Frolic . In 1955 he became a member of the newly aired Indiana Hoedowns on WFBM and in late 1955 got the opportunity to perform with stars such as Porter Wagoner , Charlie Gore and Herb and Kay Adams at the Circle Theater Jamboree in Cleveland , Ohio .

All of these appearances helped Griffith build great popularity within Indiana. Despite being mentioned in the national trade press, it was not enough for a nationwide career.

In 1958, when rock 'n' roll dominated the musical tastes of the younger generation, Griffith turned to rockabilly. With the Masters he released the single Rocket Rock and Roll / Too Sentimental on the local Saga label , which was released in March 1958.

Information about Griffith's further career is not known. He currently lives in Indiana. In 1999 the rockabilly band The Starliners covered Griffith's song Rockin 'and a-Knockin' .
