The Gazami crab ( Portunus trituberculatus , Syn . : Neptunus trituberculatus ) is a member of the swimming crab family . It is one of the most commonly fished species of crab in the world.

Occurrence

The Gazami crab range extends from the coasts of Japan in the north to Sri Lanka in the west and the coasts of northern Australia and southern New Guinea in the east, including the coasts of Taiwan, the Philippines and the islands of the Malay Archipelago and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands .

The crabs live on sandy ground at a depth of up to 50 m.

The greenish to brown back armor ( carapace ) is up to 15 cm wide and 7 cm long in the male.

While the closely related Portunus pelagicus has three thorns on the inside of the pair of legs with the scissors, there are four of the Gazami crab.

Economical meaning

The crab is particularly popular as a dish in Japan. The commercial capture of the Gazami crab is done with trawls . In 1999, 284,851 tons were caught, with 270,280 tons being nets in China and 11,819 tons in South Korea .
