The Bisson brothers , Louis-Auguste Bisson (1814–1876, called " Bisson the Elder ") and Auguste-Rosalie Bisson (1826–1900, called " Bisson the Younger "), were two pioneers of French photography in the 19th century .

life and work

Together with Félix Nadar , Édouard Baldus and Gustave Le Gray , they were the first to professionally deal with the use of the daguerreotype and photography. The two brothers were sons of Heraldry - painter Louis-François Bisson (1795-1865).

From 1841, the Bisson brothers had a photo studio called " Bisson frères " on Rue Saint Germain in Paris . They built the studio with the help of a patron. The studio, which specializes in portraits , quickly became known and was soon a meeting place for authors and artists of the time. The Bissons were commissioned to photograph all the members of the French Senate. In addition, they took architectural photographs of well-known buildings; they also accompanied Napoleon III at times . and documented the trips photographically.

The Bisson brothers are best known for their series of photographs of the Mont Blanc massif, which they climbed twice. With the first ascent in 1861, they also created the very first high mountain photographs. In contrast to other early landscape photographers, such as Gustave Le Gray, the Bisson brothers were always interested in not mystifying the landscape, but rather depicting it in a detailed and appropriate manner.

One of the most famous works is a portrait that Louis-Auguste Bisson took from Honoré de Balzac in 1842.

In 1977 photographic works by the Bisson brothers were shown at documenta 6 in Kassel in the famous photography department , which presented the connection to contemporary art in the context of “ 150 years of photography ”.
