Süssenguth brothers

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Gebrüder Süssenguth ( GS or "GESUE") was the name of a doll factory founded in Bavaria at the end of the 19th century , which had specialized in the production of dolls from light fabrics, leather and composite materials for export at the company's headquarters in Neustadt near Coburg .

history

The company was founded in 1894 and also purchased dolls from other German manufacturers such as Max Oscar Arnold , Cuno & Otto Dressel or Guttmann & Schiffnie .

In 1904 the company had its trademark registered: Under the intertwined initials GS and the word “PROTECTION - MARKE” there was a clothed standing doll, underneath a lying doll. Like a pedestal, the label “Doll of the future” was found at the foot of the brand.

Gebrüder Süssenguth also used the abbreviation "GESUE" to mark crank heads.

A special feature of the Süssenguth brothers was the "Peter" teddy bear , which was developed around 1925 and whose brand label, sewn onto the chest with a ribbon, reads "Ges. gesch. "and under it" No. 895 257 ”showed. According to the supplement, the dark "bear, as if alive", which is described in several languages, scared the children in its body proportions and with glassy black googly eyes and eye sockets and was only sold in small numbers at the time. Accordingly, exhibits were rarely found in collectors' hands or in museums . However, in 1976 a surprisingly hundred copies turned up from a factory closed in the GDR , which had a negative impact on the prices charged up until then.
