The Gediminas Columns or Pillars of Gediminas ( Lithuanian Gediminaičių stulpai ; Belarusian Калюмны ) are a symbol of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania , which shows a white, stylized castle on a red background.

history

The Gediminas Columns were the coat of arms of the Gediminid dynasty . From 1397 they were the personal insignia of Grand Duke Vytautas .

According to the chronicle of Jan Dlugosz, ten regiments, most of which came from Trakai , are said to have used the columns of Gediminas as a standard at the battle of Tannenberg .

After Lithuania declared independence in 1918, a commission developed the new state and presidential flag , which featured the Vytis on the front and the Gediminas Columns on the back.
