The former Treffurt prison

The former prison is a listed half-timbered house in the town of Treffurt in the Wartburg district in Thuringia .

history

After the establishment of the three administrative courtyards of the Treffurt estate at the end of the 16th century, Normannstein Castle lost its importance as a seat of power. Only their round tower still served the officials of Treffurt as a prison. In 1617 the Hessian magistrate von Treffurt complained about the lack of a suitable prison, since it was no longer usable in the castle. Voigt Phillipp Falk, on whose instructions the city wall was built from 1604, had a striking half-timbered building built as a new prison in 1618 directly below the courtyards on the "Drachenkopf". The former dungeon is located in the distinctive limestone retaining wall under the three-story half-timbered building behind two barred windows that are still preserved today.

The building, also known as the “Falkenstein”, now serves as a residential building. Under the prominent bay window there used to be a head of envy with a baring tongue and the inscription “From Falkenstein I look into the country, I am called Treffurter Sperrachen”.
