Tocuyito prison

The prison of Tocuyito (Penitenciaría Tocuyito) is the main prison in the state of Carabobo , Venezuela. It was built between 1959 and 1963. The prison was designed for 1,200 inmates, but is believed to have over 3,024. It is located near the town of Tocuyito , southwest of Valencia .

In 2010, the detainees in Tocuyito started a hunger strike because of attacks by the Guardia Nacional. In October 2011, the prisoners held 50 officers hostage for two weeks.

This institution is said to be the second most dangerous in the country. In 2011, 54 prisoners were killed and 115 injured.

In August 2015, 18 people died in a fire.
