Glencorse Prison Tower

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Glencorse Prison Tower is a tower on the grounds of the Glencorse Barracks in the Scottish town of Penicuik in the Midlothian Council Area . The building was included in the Scottish Monuments List in 1971 in the highest category A.

history

At the beginning of the 19th century, the Greenlaw House property was opened for the establishment of a camp for French prisoners of war from the Napoleonic Wars . The prison tower probably dates from 1804, but it is also possible that it was only built in the course of the expansion of the facility from 1813. A tower that is uniform except for its height can be found on the grounds of another military prison in Perth . The Scottish architect Robert Reid is responsible for its design .

description

The tower is located in a central square in the middle of the military buildings. There was a layer masonry of sandstone chosen. Originally, doors led into the interior of the octagonal tower on four sides . Three of these entrances have meanwhile been filled with masonry and a window has been inserted in one of them. In the same areas as the doors were, clocks are set in on the top floor of the four-story tower. Inside, both former prison cells and guard rooms are set up. The building closes with a tent roof , which, however, is almost conical. The top is flattened for the installation of a flagpole.
