Counter-flooding

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Counter-flooding refers to the deliberate flooding of non-vital areas of a ship in order to reduce heeling . If a ship has severe water ingress on one side, this can often be limited by closing the bulkheads and the ship can be prevented from capsizing for the time being . However, due to the new weight ratios, the ship can tilt, which can be exacerbated, for example, by the cargo slipping. If you now deliberately flood areas on the other side of the ship that are not essential for life, the inclination can be counteracted.
