Articulated arm grinding machine
Radial arm are used for grinding and polishing of natural stone is used. These are two-joint machines that are used either on a pedestal or wall-mounted and are operated with both hands. It is a versatile grinding machine that made it possible to grind hard stone on a large scale shortly after the middle of the 19th century , including glossy black gravestones made from Black Swedish basalt . At that time, the grinding and polishing work was mainly done by women. The polished black tombstones can still be seen in cemeteries today (2008). Radial arm are and will be for surface grinding of concrete blocks used. As these are very robust and simply constructed machines, they are widely used in stone masonry. They are either in continuous use for grinding work on small-scale handicrafts or they are only used in individual cases when workpieces need to be reground. They are suitable for grinding both hard and soft stone . The use of special grinding heads, either so-called wobble, pendulum or planetary grinding heads, improves the grinding effect. Water-cooled hollow drills can also be attached to this conventional machine type.
At the beginning of the 1990s, the articulated arm grinding machines were modernized and milling tools (so-called end mills) were added, which enable recesses in kitchen worktops , for example for sink cut-outs including an interior polishing of the sink edges. Furthermore, by tilting the work table, water draining surfaces can be milled. This modernization was due to the increasing demand for kitchen countertops. Sanding rollers can also be attached to this modern machine design. Sanding rollers allow the side of the stone to be polished. One machine type is prepared for the attachment of a saw blade that enables horizontal saw cuts. Profiled milling disks can also be attached, the profiles pre-milled on stone edges and then polished.
