Gellius Maximus

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Gellius Maximus († probably 219) was 219 Roman counter-emperor .

Gellius Maximus rose to senator despite his low origin . In Syria he commanded the legio IIII Scythica . In 219 he took advantage of the troubled political situation under Emperor Elagabal and proclaimed himself emperor. Elagabal, however, remained in control of the situation and fought the usurper. Gellius Maximus was eventually executed.

The main source on Gellius Maximus is his contemporary Cassius Dio . In the 80th book of his Roman history, he reports on the Syrian counter-emperor.
