Double page (Folio 8v / 9r) from the early modern parish register of Schrebitz.

As a court trade book, the Schrebitz parish register is an important early modern source of voluntary jurisdiction in Saxony . The 254-page manuscript contains mainly entries from the 16th century, the earliest dating being 1517 and the latest entry from 1669. The village court book was primarily used to record legal transactions in Schrebitz (Ostrau) and surrounding settlements. The work was lost until it was rediscovered in the first half of the 20th century. It is thanks to this fact that the Schrebitz parish register is a rare example of an early modern court trade register that has survived almost unchanged.

background

Schrebitz has housed the seat of the local bailiff since the 14th century, who was responsible for collecting taxes as well as for voluntary jurisdiction. The Richtgasse, which still exists today, points to the regional importance of the place in this regard. The parish register was created at the beginning of the 16th century, was continued until 1669 and then fell into oblivion. Looting during the Thirty Years 'War , the Second Silesian War and the Seven Years' War , which heavily burdened Schrebitz, survived the book unscathed. At the beginning of the 20th century it was rediscovered in the attic of a courtyard that had been used as a court of law since at least the 18th century. On the one hand, the location favored survival largely isolated from harmful environmental influences and, on the other hand, prevented destruction, damage or misuse after the parish register had lost its real meaning.

description

The Schrebitz parish book consists of 127 sheets of handmade paper in octave format , with five pages blank. The work is protected by a leather Kopert binding, which has only been partially preserved, and especially only in fragments on the back. The individual pages are written on with iron gall ink in various shades of brown, the authors are essentially two main authors, and there are also various office cursives . The handmade paper used includes at least three different watermarks that refer to an origin from Weißwasser / Oberlausitz , Goslar and Dresden .

164 individual texts from Schrebitz and the surrounding villages are recorded in the parish book. Most of these are logs of legal transactions, and there is also a pharmaceutical inventory and an incomplete “order”. Recorded voluntary jurisdiction matters include family, estate and division matters, guardianship and foster care issues, land sales and encumbrances .
