The Common plate snail ( Planorbis planorbis ) is a snail from the family of Planorbidae that the subordination of basommatophora within the snails is expected (Pulmonata).
features
The housing has 5.5 to 6 slowly increasing turns. It is up to 3.5 mm thick and up to 18 mm wide. It is almost planispiral, only slightly sunk at the bottom. It is brown and has streaks of growth. A distinct keel is formed on the upper outside.
Reproduction
The animals are hermaphrodites, but self-fertilization can occur. After fertilization, the animals lay 8–10 egg capsules with 3–30 eggs each, which develop in 11–14 days. Ready-made snails hatch from the eggs. The service life is up to 4 years.
Way of life and distribution
The species lives in slow-flowing, plant-rich waters that should, however, have a muddy bottom. The animals live there in the bank area to a depth of about 1 m (but see article Planorbis !). The animals come from Western to Eastern Europe. They are absent in southern Europe and extend in Scandinavia to southern Norway and southern Sweden.
Similar species
The species can be confused with Planorbis carinatus if in some specimens the keel is shifted to the middle of the turn. In case of doubt, however, the species can be distinguished on the basis of anatomical features (sex organs).
Danger
The species is classified as potentially endangered in Austria.
