Planorbis is a genus of snails from the family of flat-faced snails (Planorbidae), which belongs to the (probably paraphyletic) subordination of water pulmonary snails (Basommatophora) within the lung snails (Pulmonata).

features

The case is almost planispiral, only slightly sunk on the underside. A distinct keel is formed on the outside. However, the animals are anatomically twisted to the left. If the housing is oriented accordingly, horizontally with the opening to the left of the center, the spiral is recessed at the top. The animals carry the housing tilted sideways with the bottom facing up.

Habitat and Distribution

The species of the genus live in slowly flowing or standing rivers and lakes in the shallow water of the riparian zones. In oxygen-rich waters, however, they can also live deep down ("foreign to the surface") with a water-filled lung cavity, so that two species ( planorbis and carinatus ) were first discovered in Lake Lunzer See in 1982 by a diver at a depth of 7 meters knew nothing before.

The genus is distributed worldwide.

The representatives of the genus Planorbis are the first intermediate hosts for Alaria alata , a suction worm which parasitizes canines.

There are currently around 5 recent species in the genus, which are divided into two sub-genera:

There are also a number of exclusively fossil forms.
