The common short-winged fly ( Stenus clavicornis ) is a beetle from the family of the short-winged fly (Staphylinidae).

features

The beetles reach a body length of 5 to 5.3 millimeters. The pine buttons are yellow, legs apart at the knees and tarsi yellowish red. The head is only slightly wider than the wing . These have a narrow and slightly wrinkled point structure. At least the root of the scutellum is brownish-red in color.

Occurrence and way of life

The species is distributed throughout the Palearctic and South Asia. In Europe the species occurs from the far north to the Mediterranean area and is common and widespread everywhere. The species rises in the mountains to subalpine locations and can also be found in the Alps above the tree line . The animals colonize mosses at the edge of the forest and meadows, especially in damp places, as well as grass, hay, reeds and other plant materials. They can also be found in dry places such as under stones, on field edges and also in rotting plant material. In winter they can often be found in the nests of moles. In summer swarming Imagines evening. The species occurs from March to late autumn, the animals can also be found occasionally in winter.
