Genaro Léon (born August 10, 1960 in Sinaloa ) is a former Mexican professional boxer and first world champion of the WBO welterweight.

Amateur career

As an amateur, he won the Central American and Caribbean Championships in the Dominican Republic in 1981 and the Latin American Championships in Brazil. In 1982 the silver medal followed at the Central American and Caribbean Games in Cuba and in 1983 the bronze medal at the Pan American Games in Venezuela.

In 1984 he took part in the Summer Olympics in Los Angeles , defeating Daniel Dominguez from Argentina, Akinobu Hiranaka from Japan and Khemais Refai from Tunisia, before losing to Mark Breland from the USA in the quarter-finals .

Professional career

In 1984 he switched to the pros and won 30 of 32 fights, 27 of them prematurely. He boxed in Mexico, the USA and France and was also able to defeat ex-IBF world champion Charlie Brown .

On May 6, 1989 he was able to compete in California for the first WBO world title in welterweight and won the fight by knockout in the first round against Danny Garcia from Puerto Rico. However, he put the title down without defending his title in December of the same year and then remained undefeated in 14 other fights, where he could also beat ex-WBC world champion Saoul Mamby .

On January 12, 1993 he fought in New York for the WBC welterweight title against Buddy McGirt , but suffered a point defeat. After further defeats, including against world champions Luis Ramón Campas and James Page , he ended his career in July 2001.
